|“As a goal-oriented, big-picture
executive, Lisa’s great value lies
in her ability to lead organizations to the realization of their full capacity.
The attitudes and objectives established during Paradigm’s
teambuilding exercises permeated the rest of the retreat, instilling
a positive, collaborative mindset that has remained with the
staff in their approach to the Variety team.”

Barrington Elementary was an 11-year-old public school in growing
suburban St. Louis, Mo., with a diverse student population and Special
Education students who are mainstreamed into regular education classrooms.
Due to personnel changes many of Barrington’s faculty and staff
were new to teaching and the school. Others had been
at Barrington since its inception and brought with them a strong history
and solid traditions. The challenge was to accelerate the development
of all educators and administrative staff into a supportive and high-performing
team, and to build on a successful foundation to create a positive,
collaborative learning environment that supported every student, faculty
and staff member.
What We Did:
After interviewing key stakeholders and training them to interview
all 60 remaining faculty and staff, Paradigm Shift Studio designed
a one-day workshop. The workshop was collaboratively planned with
a diverse team of Barrington teachers and staff, each of whom contributed
ideas and took responsibility for follow-through. Participants engaged
in a structured process of facilitated dialogue, inquiry, storytelling,
strategic visioning, and action planning. The team began building
deeper relationships and working together by proposing concrete ideas
and projects that would help Barrington create the positive, supportive
learning environment they collectively envisioned.
As a result, there is now a stronger sense of “team” at
Barrington. Sixteen initiatives were explored that enhance the learning
community; most are in the process of being implemented, including:
- A teacher’s resource of “success stories”
to describe high-points in education at Barrington;
- After-school aerobics for faculty/staff;
- Teacher-initiated appreciative interviews of students as a way
to help design next year’s curriculum;
Principal-initiated appreciative questions to introduce discussions
in regular staff meetings.
